Laser Hair Removal In Charlevoix, MI
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure performed by dermatologists. It consists of several treatments over the course of several months that use light to target and destroy hair follicles.
It is a non-surgical procedure that is semi-permanent in nature. Repeated sessions are necessary to sufficiently reduce hair growth since hair grows in cycles and not all the follicles can be targeted at a given time. It is important to note that laser hair removal does not always remove all hair permanently. Studies cite up to 80% permanent hair reduction once completing a full treatment course. This is typically achieved in 4-6 sessions. However, some individuals note an even greater reduction. Maintenance, i.e., shaving, touch-up laser treatments, may be required.
Who is Laser Hair Removal for?
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in hair follicle. It can be used to treat light brown to black hairs that are fine or coarse in texture. It is not suitable for white hairs or peach fuzz (we have a different procedure for that!). Laser hair removal can be used to treat unwanted hair virtually anywhere on the skin, including:
- cheeks
- upper lip
- chin
- neck
- chest
- abdomen
- back
- buttocks
- underarms
- arms
- bikini area
- legs
Is Laser Hair Removal safe?
Laser hair removal is extremely safe when performed under the guidance of a well-trained dermatologist. It is imperative you know the qualifications of the person treating you AND only pursue treatment at facilities where you are first evaluated by a dermatologist or dermatology advanced provider to assess if you are a suitable candidate and select the appropriate device. For instance, only certain types of lasers can be safely and successfully used on individuals with skin of color. Laser Hair Removal should not be performed on tanned skin, even if the tan comes from a bottle or spray, as it can lead to ineffective treatment, and even burns. It is also unsafe if you are taking certain medications, which your dermatologist will ask you about prior to determining if the treatment is right for you.
Your dermatologist will give you instructions on how to prepare for your appointments, which includes abstaining from plucking or waxing for at least 4-6 weeks prior to starting your treatments (shaving is allowed) and avoiding the use of certain topical products.
Prior to the laser hair reduction procedure, you will shave the treatment area so the hair is flush with the skin. At your appointment, your skin will be cleansed and you will be supplied with eye protection. A cooling gel is applied before and during the procedure. After your session your skin will look slightly red and can become swollen. This is temporary. Once you are at your treatment goal, you might never require another treatment or might desire rare touch-up treatments.
